Academic Quality Framework Chapter 17, Part G

AQF17: Research Programmes of Study, Part G: Personal Academic Support System

Overview

  1. The Doctoral School (‘the DS’) is responsible for establishing and publicising a clear system of academic support and advice on progress for all its students.
  2. Research programmes of study which rely in whole or in part on practice research must offer specific guidance and support for students (see AQF17 Part M: Practice Research).
    .

Areas of Academic Support

  1. The academic support and advice provided must ensure that students can consult a named officer about:
    1. General academic guidance
    2. Academic problems/difficulties
    3. Progression routes
    4. Individual progress
    5. Change of programme or mode of study
    6. Other academic issues
    7. Where appropriate, the named officer may be defined as a member of the student’s supervisory panel.

Representation

  1. Individual members of faculty should not take on a formal role of representing or advocating for the interests of an individual student on any panels, boards or other bodies. Where access is permitted within the regulations and where the individual student wishes to be represented, representation should be conducted by the Students’ Union or other non-legal body.
  2. Members of faculty will continue to provide University bodies with relevant information on individual students in an objective and impartial manner.

References

  1. The DS is responsible for ensuring that an appropriate mechanism is in place to provide references upon request.

Central Services

  1. In addition to the academic support provided by the DS, the University provides professional support for students, meeting a diversity of needs. The University will ensure that the range and availability of these services is well publicised to students and staff. Individuals responsible for personal academic support should in particular be aware of the full range of these so that they can refer students as appropriate to the relevant service. Information about these services can be found in the Student Handbook and include:
    1. The Doctoral School
    2. Residence Life
    3. Student Support and Development
    4. Registry
