Terms of Reference – Ethics Review Panel (ERP)

Context

The Ethics Review Panel (ERP) is tasked with reviewing research ethics applications and assessing the ethical implications of proposed research projects conducted by staff and students at the university. The committee ensures that all research complies with ethical standards and respects the rights, dignity, and welfare of participants.

Terms of Reference

  1. Review and assess research ethics applications submitted by university researchers via Canvas to ensure compliance with ethical standards.
  2. Evaluate the potential risks and benefits associated with research proposals, ensuring the protection of human participants, animals, and the environment.
  3. Provide feedback to researchers on improving their applications to meet ethical requirements.
  4. Ensure ongoing compliance of approved research projects with ethical standards, including reviewing any amendments to previously approved protocols.
  5. Stay informed on current ethical guidelines and best practices in research governance.
  6. Refer complex or high-risk ethical issues to the University Research Ethics & Integrity Committee (UREIC) for further guidance.
  7. Provide recommendations for the development of training and resources to support researchers in understanding and complying with ethical requirements.
  8. Submit quarterly reports to UREIC detailing the number of research ethics applications, notable issues, and decisions made on those applications.

Quarterly.

Reports To

Reports to the University Research Ethics and Integrity Committee (UREIC).

This Panel does not receive any direct reports from sub-committees but may request that working parties be set up to address certain issues as appropriate.

Quorum

Meetings are quorate when the Chair (or Designated Vice-Chair) and 50% of the members are present.
