Course Overview

Managers in businesses are regularly supplied with reports and data to inform their business decisions. having the ability to analyse and interpret data or understanding how the data presented has been collected and analysed is essential  to make the best business decisions

This course introduces students to the study of statistics, the theories behind the various methods used and how to use the tools to analyse the data. Students will   develop their ability to use   techniques necessary for carrying out well-informed simple regression and apply those ideas to business economic problems.

K2b Use the statistical concepts and methods used in business.

S1b Apply the concept of hypothesis testing in problems involving inferences about population statistics in the context of business.
S2b Solve business problems involving probability, distributions, inference and regression.

T1b Identify strengths and weaknesses in a range of verbal commentary based on statistical study.
T3b Demonstrate a sound technical proficiency in written English and skill in selecting vocabulary so as to communicate effectively to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

The scheduled teaching and learning activities for this course are:

Lectures/seminars

40 scheduled hours – typically including induction, consolidation or revision, and assessment activity hours.

Version 1:all sessions in the same sized group

OR

Version 2: most of the sessions in larger groups; some of the sessions in smaller groups

Faculty will hold regular ‘office hours’, which are opportunities for students to drop in or sign up to explore ideas, raise questions, or seek targeted guidance or feedback, individually or in small groups. 

Students are to attend and participate in all the scheduled teaching and learning activities for this course and to manage their directed learning and independent study.

Assessment

Both formative and summative assessment are used as part of this course, with purely formative opportunities typically embedded within interactive teaching sessions, office hours, and/or the VLE.
