Global Scholar Housing Applications via StarRez
In your application, you will have the option to choose your preferred Room Type, but not a specific Residence Hall. All room assignments are made through a lottery system, meaning allocations are made randomly, not on a first-come, first-served basis. This allocation process is entirely automated and handled by the StarRez system, not by the Housing or Residence Life team. The timing of your housing application submission does not affect your room allocation in any way.
For shared apartments, you will be placed with other students from the Global Scholars program. You can also submit Roommate preference(s) in your application. Please ensure that all names match exactly (i.e., use legal first names rather than preferred names) to avoid issues with roommate allocation.
Please note that en-suite rooms are limited and are a popular choice among students. Even if you select an en-suite room as your first choice or request specific roommates, this does not guarantee that your preference will be granted.
You can make changes to your housing application until the application deadline on November 22nd. To edit your application, simply log back into the Housing Portal to adjust your ranking of Room Types or your preferred Roommate(s). The changes will be automatically updated in our system, so there’s no need to email the Housing Team to confirm your modifications.
Semester In Housing Applications via StarRez
For your shared apartment, you will be placed with another student from the Semester In program. As such, you can submit a preference for Roommate in your application. Please ensure that all names match exactly (i.e., use legal first names rather than preferred names) to avoid issues with roommate allocation.
If you do not specify a preferred roommate, one will be assigned to you at random using a lottery system. This means that allocations are determined randomly, rather than on a first-come, first-served basis. The entire allocation process is automated and managed by the StarRez system, rather than by the Housing or Residence Life team. Additionally, the timing of your housing application submission does not influence your room assignment in any way.
You can make changes to your housing application until the application deadline on November 22nd. To edit your application, simply log back into the Housing Portal to adjust your preferred Roommate(s). The changes will be automatically updated in our system, so there’s no need to email the Housing Team to confirm your modifications.
Reasonable Adjustments and Housing Accommodations
In your housing application, you will be asked whether you require any reasonable adjustments or housing accommodations.
What is a Reasonable Adjustment?
A reasonable adjustment is a modification made by the University to ensure your disability does not disadvantage you in your studies. However, these adjustments cannot alter the academic standards of your program.
To arrange reasonable adjustments, you must provide supporting documentation (such as medical notes or reports from relevant medical professionals like a general practitioner, educational psychologist, or psychiatrist).
If you require a reasonable adjustment and live on-campus in Oakland during the Fall Term, you should already be registered with Disability Access Services (DAS). The Student Support and Development (SSD) team in London will have access to the documentation you’ve submitted to confirm your registration.
While we will do our best to assign appropriate rooms to students requiring specific accommodations, please note that late requests may not be fulfilled.
What is a Housing Accommodation?
A housing accommodation refers to personal preferences or requirements that may affect your housing assignment. These can include, but are not limited to, allergies, religious practices, dietary restrictions, or particular daily routines.
Please provide any relevant information—no matter how specific—to help us create the most suitable living environment for you.
However, please note that preferences based on specific building selection or unsupported perceptions of safety will not be considered during the allocation process.
We will make every effort to meet your needs; however, our ability to fulfill specific requests is contingent on room availability.
How Do I Submit My Housing Application?
To submit your preference for Room Type, you will need to log in to our Housing Portal, StarRez. You must first create your StarRez account to make sure that you have full access to our Housing Portal. Please note: you will not have the ability to create your StarRez account until you receive an email notification that applications are open.
You may hear of peers receiving notification that the portal is open before or after you. This is due to a staggered data import process. Rest assured, housing is assigned through a lottery system, not on a first-come-first-serve basis, so being part of a later upload wave will not negatively affect your housing allocation.
In order to create your account, you must use your Northeastern email address (@northeastern.edu). Once your StarRez account has been created, you will receive an email with a link to reset your password and complete your registration. Please note that your username should be your email address.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. All Global Scholars are required to live in university-sponsored housing assigned by NU London Housing for the entire duration of the program. There is no option to waive the residential requirement. This policy is in place, among other reasons, to ensure staff can provide support in emergency situations, foster connections among students, and help ease the transition to both London and the program.
No, there is no meal plan provided. In London, each student apartment will have a kitchen, including a mini fridge and stove top, so students are expected to prepare their own meals. This is a common aspect of the UK university experience.
When you arrive at your Residence Hall, you will receive both a bedding pack and a kitchen pack to help you settle in comfortably. The bedding pack contains essential items, including a duvet with its cover, a fitted sheet, pillows, and pillowcases, ensuring you have everything you need for a good night’s sleep.
The kitchen pack is designed to provide you with basic cooking essentials and includes a pot, a pan, a mug, plates, a bowl, cutlery, and cooking utensils like a spatula.
Please note that you will need to purchase your own towel and any additional personal items you wish to have during your stay. This allows you to customize your living space according to your preferences and needs.
