Our student support team provides free, confidential financial advice to help you manage your money effectively during your studies. From navigating student loans to budgeting tips, we’re here to ensure you can focus on your education without financial stress.

Financial assistance available

We assist with various financial concerns you might face during your time at university, including:

  • Student loan guidance: help understanding and liaising with the student loan companies.
  • University bursary: administering the Northeastern University London Bursary, providing up to £4,000. More information is available here.
  • U.K. bank accounts: assistance for international students in setting up a U.K. bank account. Save The Student has some guidance here.
  • Additional support: help for independent, care-experienced, or estranged students.

Student Hardship Fund

The Student Hardship Fund supports students in unexpected financial crises, such as serious illness, non-payment of wages, or financial fraud. The maximum award is £1,000. To be eligible, students must demonstrate reasonable prior financial arrangements and that the hardship is due to unforeseeable circumstances.

  • The fund is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students (excluding apprentices and partner programme students).

Budgeting tips for London

Managing your finances effectively is crucial while studying. Here are our top tips:

  • Ensure you receive all eligible financial support from the Student Loans Company.
  • Use the Senate House and Northeastern University London digital libraries to access free course materials.
  • Apply for a Transport for London 18+ Student Oyster photocard.
  • Get a national railcard for discounts on train tickets; if you are 31+ and enrolled on a full-time programme of study you can apply as a mature student for a 16-25 railcard.
  • Cook in batches and use a reusable travel mug to save on food and drink costs.
  • Utilise Save the Student’s budgeting resources.
  • Apply for a Council Tax exemption if you are a full-time student.
  • Look into the NHS Low Income Scheme for help with prescription and dental costs.
