What is a degree apprenticeship?

Degree apprenticeships combine higher education with practical work experience. You are employed in a paid, full-time role which allows you to gain new skills and knowledge both “on-the-job”, in the workplace, and “off-the-job”, with a training provider. On successful completion you will achieve an apprenticeship certificate and a degree qualification.

How do they work?

Degree apprenticeships are designed so that the majority of learning takes place in the workplace, with a minimum of 6 hours a week dedicated to academic learning (either online or in-person, depending on the programme.) Practically, this translates to a four day work week and one study day each week for your academic learning. Undergraduate degree apprenticeships are typically a similar duration to a traditional degree, but some may take longer. They take place across the entire year rather than typical university terms or semesters.

Our apprenticeship programmes are suitable for recent school leavers, or for upskilling and re-skilling if you are mid-career. We are committed to lifelong learning, pastoral support and to providing routes into digital careers for underrepresented groups. 

What qualifications do I need?

To do a degree apprenticeship you will usually need to have finished your A Levels (or equivalent like Level 3 BTEC or Level 3 apprenticeship) and meet some other eligibility criteria, such as having resided in the UK for at least three years before the start of your apprenticeship and having the right to work in the UK. Because degree apprenticeships combine a job with training, you’ll also need to be hired by an employer. Each employer can set their own entry criteria, with their own process, which means you might end up needing to make several applications to different employers.
